- Why in news
- On 1 October 2026 the Union Ministry of Education extended the last date for NMMSS applications for 2026-27 to 31 October 2026. Verification dates were also moved: L1 to 15 November and L2 to 30 November 2026.
- What it is
- The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Central scheme of the Ministry of Education. It gives scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker families to reduce dropout after Class VIII. Students apply through the National Scholarship Portal and money goes by DBT.
- Amount
- Eligible students get ₹12,000 per year, paid by DBT to bank accounts.
- Fresh awards
- One lakh fresh scholarships are given each year to Class IX students who qualify in the State/UT selection examination.
- Duration
- The scholarship covers Classes IX to XII; it continues from Class X to XII through renewal, subject to academic requirements.
- Schools covered
- Students in state government, government-aided and local body schools are eligible.
Don’t confuse with NMMSS vs NTSE: NMMSS is a means-cum-merit scheme for Class IX-XII with a State-run test; NTSE is a national talent search run by NCERT.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Reduces dropout after Class VIII among meritorious poor students.
- DBT through NSP cuts leakages and delays.
Problems
- Only about one lakh fresh awards a year against large eligible numbers.
- The ₹12,000 amount has not changed in a long time and may not cover costs; verification delays force deadline extensions.
Way forward
- Raise the amount and the number of awards, and link them to inflation.
- Improve NSP verification so deadlines need not be extended.
