- Why in news
- On 22 September 2026, PIB marked five years of the National Single Window System, with updated coverage figures and new integrations such as digital IEM and Industrial Licence processing.
- What it is
- The National Single Window System is a digital portal run by DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It helps investors find the approvals their business needs and apply for and track them through one interface. It brings Central and State approvals together to cut duplication and compliance burden.
- Launch and implementer
- NSWS was launched on 22 September 2021 and is implemented by DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- Know Your Approvals (KYA)
- KYA identifies the approvals applicable to a business based on its proposed activities. Its guidance is advisory and not legal advice.
- Single Business ID
- NSWS uses PAN as the Single Business ID. Authorised representatives are authenticated through DSC, and sole proprietors through DigiLocker.
- FDI integration
- The Foreign Investment Facilitation Portal is integrated with NSWS, giving a single window for FDI applications that need Government approval.
- Fees
- Registration on NSWS is free. Applicants pay the statutory fees set by the concerned authority through the portal.
- Flagship gateways
- NSWS is a common gateway for approvals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Ethanol Policy, Vehicle Scrapping Policy and the Indian Footwear and Leather Development Programme.
Don’t confuse with NSWS vs State Single Window Systems: NSWS is the national portal. State single windows are run by States, and NSWS links to them through a State Registration Form.
Don’t confuse with NSWS vs Invest India: NSWS handles approvals and applications. Invest India is the national investment promotion and facilitation agency.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Reduces duplication, compliance burden and approval timelines through one-time submission and online tracking.
- Improves transparency and Centre-State coordination, which supports Ease of Doing Business and investor confidence.
Problems
- Integration is uneven across States and departments, and backend systems differ.
- Approval times still depend on the processing speed of individual departments.
Way forward
- Integrate more Ministries, States and regulators fully at transaction level, as PESO has done.
- Set time limits for approvals and monitor them through the dashboard.
Put in your answer

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A lasting DPIIT portal with launch date and features; moderate Prelims chance but not likely to be set as a question.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
