- Why in news
- On 22 July 2026, the Tribal Affairs Minister told Rajya Sabha that over 7.24 crore screenings had been done under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission as of 16 July 2026.
- What it is
- The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) is a Health Ministry mission to screen for, treat and prevent sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder common in tribal populations. It targets screening of people aged 0-40 years in affected tribal States. Results are recorded on the SCD Portal.
- Target age group
- Screening covers people aged 0-40 years, at all health facilities from district hospitals down to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
- Drug access
- Hydroxyurea is on the NHM Essential Drugs List at sub-health centres, PHCs, CHCs and district hospitals.
- Funding route
- The Health Ministry gives technical and financial support to States/UTs for screening and drug purchase, based on PIPs under NHM.
- Patient services
- Services include follow-up, counselling on lifestyle, pre-marriage and pre-natal decisions, folic acid tablets, yoga sessions and crisis management with referral.
Don’t confuse with Diseased vs carrier: A carrier has one sickle gene and is usually healthy but can pass it on; a diseased person has two copies and has the disease. Carriers here (about 20.4 lakh) far outnumber diseased (about 2.48 lakh).
Don’t confuse with Mission vs NHM: NSCAEM is a dedicated mission; NHM is the wider health programme whose PIPs and Essential Drugs List fund and supply it.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Early screening and counselling of couples can reduce new cases in high-burden tribal areas.
- Links a genetic disease to primary health care, improving tribal health equity.
Problems
- Lifelong care needs reliable drug supply, referral and follow-up in remote tribal areas.
- Counselling on marriage decisions is socially sensitive and risks stigma.
Way forward
- Strengthen follow-up, hydroxyurea supply and crisis care at primary level.
- Pair screening with community awareness and stigma reduction.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting health mission with screening in 17 tribal States; mostly data, so no question set.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
