- Why in news
- On 26 October 2026, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case story of an SC postgraduate student who studied abroad under the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme in 2023-24.
- What it is
- The National Overseas Scholarship Scheme is a Central scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. It helps selected students from Scheduled Caste and similar disadvantaged groups to study for master's and PhD degrees abroad. It pays tuition and a yearly maintenance allowance.
- Run by
- The scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
- Support given
- The scholarship covers tuition fees and gives an annual maintenance allowance. In this case the allowance was £9,900.
- Target group
- The case highlights its role in helping Scheduled Caste students pursue higher education abroad.
- Remaining gap
- Rising living costs abroad still made managing expenses hard for the beneficiary despite the allowance.
Don’t confuse with NOS vs Padho Pardesh: NOS is a scholarship with tuition and maintenance support. Padho Pardesh was an interest subsidy scheme on education loans for overseas study for minority students.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Reduces the financial barrier that keeps SC students from global higher education.
- Builds skilled professionals from disadvantaged groups, supporting social mobility and inclusion.
Problems
- Fixed allowances may not keep pace with rising living costs abroad.
- Limited slots and awareness may leave many eligible students out.
Way forward
- Review allowances regularly against living costs in the host country.
- Widen outreach in rural and first-generation learner groups and track outcomes of beneficiaries.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting scheme for SC students, but this is a beneficiary story with no new provisions; schemes are 16% of Prelims news questions, yet no fresh facts here.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
