- Why in news
- On 22 February 2026, PM Modi inaugurated the Namo Bharat rapid rail and Meerut Metro in Meerut and dedicated the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor to the nation.
- What it is
- Namo Bharat is India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), a semi-high-speed commuter rail for the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut corridor. It is built by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture of the Centre and the NCR states. It is meant to cut travel time and ease road congestion across the NCR.
- First of its kind
- This is India's first Namo Bharat RRTS service. Rapid rail and metro were launched together from a single platform.
- Shared track and station
- Namo Bharat and the Meerut Metro will run on the same track and station, a first for India.
- Multimodal integration
- The corridor integrates Indian Railways, Metro and bus stands at four points: Sarai Kale Khan, Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad and Meerut.
- Women staff
- Most train operators and station control staff on the Meerut service are women.
- Implementing agency
- NCRTC, a joint venture of the Government of India and the governments of Delhi, UP, Haryana and Rajasthan, implements the RRTS.
Don’t confuse with RRTS vs metro: RRTS is a regional, semi-high-speed commuter rail with fewer stops over longer distances. A metro serves intra-city travel with frequent stops.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Faster regional commuting eases road congestion and pollution in the NCR.
- Integration with metro and bus stands lets commuters change modes in one place and widens access to jobs.
Problems
- Last-mile connectivity and fare affordability decide how many people actually shift from road to rail.
- Land acquisition, cost overruns and coordination among several states and agencies can delay such projects.
Way forward
- Build feeder bus and non-motorised transport links and keep fares integrated across modes.
- Plan land use around stations (transit-oriented development) to raise ridership.
Put in your answer
Metro growth: The PM said metros ran in only 5 cities before 2014 and now run in more than 25, making India's network the third largest in the world.
Commuter benefit: Integration lets commuters travel within the city or go straight to Delhi, reducing the need for workers and students to rent homes in Delhi.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting infrastructure topic; facts like length or implementing body are thin in this release, and no debate. Rapid rail not often asked.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
