- Why in news
- On 2 October 2026 the Ministry of Home Affairs said 28 places and features in the UT of Ladakh now carry standard names on the official Survey of India map. The names were fixed in consultation with the UT administration.
- What it is
- Survey of India (SoI) is the national mapping agency under the Department of Science and Technology. It prepares the official maps of India. Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019 after the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019. Its terrain includes high passes, glaciers, valleys and lakes.
- Number of names
- 28 places and features in Ladakh were identified with standard names.
- Purpose
- Formal listing on the map is meant to give accurate recognition and better public awareness of the places.
- Who acted
- The Ministry of Home Affairs announced it; the Union government worked with the UT of Ladakh.
- Feature types listed
- The list covers peaks, passes, glaciers, valleys, lakes, rivers, water bodies and land areas, for example Chapchingal Pass, Skamri Glacier and Yangpa River.
- Survey of India
- Survey of India is India's oldest scientific department, set up in 1767, and works under the Department of Science and Technology.
Don’t confuse with Survey of India vs Geological Survey of India: Survey of India makes topographic and official maps. Geological Survey of India studies rocks, minerals and geological hazards, and works under the Ministry of Mines.
Places in the news: 26 Prelims questions since 2013, rising (12% of news questions in 2022–26); they test location and why it matters.
Why it matters
- Standard names on the official map reduce confusion over local names and help administration, planning and navigation.
- It gives formal recognition to local geography and heritage in a border UT.
Problems
- Local names often have several spellings or variants, so agreeing one standard form is hard.
- Place names in border regions can be politically sensitive.
Way forward
- Keep consulting local bodies and experts so names reflect local usage.
- Publish the names in open digital maps and update all official records consistently.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Places are 26 of 327 news-linked Prelims questions, but this is a bare list of names with no testable detail. Places almost never reach Mains.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
