- Why in news
- On 21 August 2026 the Government issued a PIB FAQ on the Ken-Betwa Link Project, giving its status, cost, benefits, R&R package, clearances and Panna Tiger Reserve safeguards.
- What it is
- The Ken-Betwa Link Project moves water from the Ken to the Betwa river to serve drought-prone Bundelkhand in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is the first project under the National Perspective Plan for river interlinking to reach implementation. The Ken flows through the Panna landscape, and the dam site lies in Panna Tiger Reserve's vicinity.
- Benefits
- Irrigation to 10.62 lakh ha, drinking water to about 62 lakh people, 103 MW hydropower and 27 MW solar.
- Greater Panna Landscape Council
- Set up under the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh to implement the Integrated Landscape Management Plan prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India.
- Clearances
- Environmental Clearance 2017, Wildlife Clearance 2016, Tribal Affairs clearance 2017, Forest Clearance 2023.
Don’t confuse with Ken vs Betwa: The Ken is the donor basin where Daudhan Dam is built; the Betwa is the recipient basin.
Don’t confuse with Panna Tiger Reserve vs Greater Panna Landscape: The reserve is the protected core; the landscape plan covers the surrounding area too.
Places in the news: 26 Prelims questions since 2013, rising (12% of news questions in 2022–26); they test location and why it matters.
Why it matters
- Improves water security and drought resilience in Bundelkhand through irrigation and drinking water.
- Adds hydropower and solar capacity and may reduce distress migration.
Problems
- Forest loss and impact on Panna Tiger Reserve habitat, including tiger, vulture and gharial.
- Displacement of project-affected families and timely, fair R&R.
- Delays: canal work yet to begin and the 2030 target is tight.
Way forward
- Strict monitoring of the Environmental Management Plan and landscape plan through the GPLC.
- Complete R&R with consent, resurvey of omitted families and grievance redress.
- Pair the project with groundwater recharge and efficient micro-irrigation.
