- Why in news
- On 25 March 2026 the Union Cabinet approved continuing the IVFRT Scheme for five years, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031, with an outlay of Rs 1,800 crore.
- What it is
- IVFRT is a Ministry of Home Affairs project that links immigration, visa issuance and foreigner registration on one digital platform. It aims to ease travel for genuine visitors while strengthening national security. It was first approved in 2010 and has since been extended in phases.
- Coverage
- Covers 117 Immigration Posts, 15 FRROs and 854 FROs/SPs/DCPs.
- Next phase focus
- Three areas: emerging technology innovations, transformation of core infrastructure, and technology and service optimisation.
Don’t confuse with IVFRT vs Bureau of Immigration: IVFRT is the MHA technology scheme and platform; the Bureau of Immigration is the agency that enforces immigration control.
Don’t confuse with FRRO vs FRO: FRROs are regional registration officers in major centres; FROs are in districts, usually SPs or DCPs.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Faster, contactless visa and immigration services support tourism, business and medical travel.
- Integrated tracking of foreigners strengthens internal security and helps manage illegal migration under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
Problems
- Large centralised databases of biometric and personal data raise privacy and cyber-security risks.
- Repeated extensions and cost revisions show slow implementation.
Way forward
- Build strong data protection and audit safeguards into the platform.
- Expand e-gates and kiosks beyond major airports while keeping security checks.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Cabinet approved continuation 2026-31 with Rs 1800 crore; lasting scheme, but a question is unlikely.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
