- Why in news
- Prime Minister Modi made an official visit to Malaysia on 7-8 February 2026. A joint statement issued on 8 February 2026 reaffirmed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and listed new MoUs and cooperation areas.
- Partnership status
- Diplomatic relations began in 1957. Ties were raised to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
- Trade frameworks
- Leaders stressed MICECA (bilateral) and AITIGA (ASEAN-India goods pact). AITIGA is under review.
- Counter-terrorism co-chairs
- India and Malaysia co-chair the ADMM-Plus Counter-Terrorism Working Group for 2024-2027.
- BRICS
- Malaysia is a BRICS Partner Country and aspires to full membership. India chairs BRICS in 2026.
- Maritime stance

Don’t confuse with MICECA vs AITIGA: MICECA is the India-Malaysia bilateral economic cooperation agreement. AITIGA is the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement covering all ASEAN members.
Don’t confuse with AOIP vs IPOI: AOIP is ASEAN's Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. IPOI is India's Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. The two are being aligned.
International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
Why it matters
- Strengthens India's Act East and Indo-Pacific policy through a key ASEAN partner.
- Local currency settlement and UPI-type payment links (NIPL-PayNet) reduce dependence on the dollar and cut remittance costs.
Problems
- Bilateral trade rests on palm oil imports and market access issues, which need resolution.
- Malaysia's BRICS aspiration and varied views on South China Sea disputes may complicate alignment.
Way forward
- Speed up the AITIGA review and use MICECA fully.
- Deepen semiconductor, digital and defence cooperation through the new working groups and dialogues.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting bilateral topic with a Joint Statement, but bilateral visits rarely yield Prelims facts; international items are 19% of news-linked Prelims questions, mostly bodies and agreements.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
