Why in news
On 27 January 2026, at the 16th India–EU Summit in India, PM Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly announced the conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
What it is
The India–EU FTA is a bilateral trade pact between India and the 27-member European Union. It covers goods, services, rules of origin, trade remedies, customs, SMEs and digital trade. Talks began in 2007, stalled in 2013, and were relaunched in 2022.
Place in India's FTA list
The EU becomes India's 22nd FTA partner.
Services commitments
The EU offers access to 144 subsectors; India offers 102 subsectors to the EU.
CBAM provisions
India secured a most-favoured-nation assurance on flexibilities the EU grants third countries under CBAM, plus cooperation on recognising carbon prices and verifiers.
Trade in 2024-25
Bilateral goods trade was USD 136.54 billion, with Indian exports of USD 75.85 billion and imports of USD 60.68 billion.

Don’t confuse with FTA vs CEPA/CECA: An FTA mainly cuts tariffs on goods. India's CEPA/CECA-type pacts also cover services, investment and cooperation. The India–EU deal is called an FTA but covers services, IP and digital trade too.

Don’t confuse with EU vs EFTA: The EU is a 27-member political and economic union. EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) is a separate group; India has a separate FTA with it.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
