- Why in news
- On 9 March 2026, the Minister of State for Power told the Rajya Sabha that a task force is drawing up the roadmap for the India Energy Stack. Pilots are planned in five distribution utility areas, with a demonstration in FY 2026-27.
- Purpose
- IES is a digital blueprint for the whole power sector, letting different parts of the system connect and communicate securely through standard protocols.
- Task force
- The Ministry of Power set up a task force of domain experts and stakeholders, including Ministries, State utilities, regulators, Gencos and Transcos, to design the roadmap and components.
- Interoperability
- IES will lay down protocols and specifications so data, services and systems work together across the power value chain.
- Pilots
- Distribution utilities of Delhi, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai are chosen for pilots, with demonstration in FY 2026-27.
- Funds
- Rs 51.3 crore is allocated for developing IES; Rs 3.88 crore has been released so far.
Don’t confuse with Gencos vs Transcos vs Discoms: Gencos generate power, Transcos move it over high-voltage lines, and distribution utilities (Discoms) deliver it to consumers. IES covers all of them.
Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.
Why it matters
- A common standard can let utilities, regulators and consumers share data, improving planning, billing and integration of renewables.
- Open protocols can reduce vendor lock-in and support new services such as demand response.
Problems
- Utilities differ widely in data quality, IT systems and finances, which makes adoption uneven.
- Sharing consumer and grid data raises privacy and cybersecurity concerns.
Way forward
- Test in the pilot utilities first, then scale up with clear standards and data-protection safeguards.
- Build utility capacity and keep stakeholder consultation going through the task force.
