Why in news
The Union Health Ministry will convene the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare on 29 June 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, chaired by J.P. Nadda (release dated 27 June 2026).
What it is
The Central Council of Health and Family Welfare is the apex advisory body of the Union Health Ministry. It brings the Centre and States together to review health policies and programmes and to recommend ways to carry them out. It works as a forum for cooperative federalism in health.
Legal basis
The Council is constituted under Article 263, which provides for an Inter-State Council to coordinate and advise on Centre-State matters.
Chair
The Union Health Minister chairs the conference; State Health Ministers attend as members.
Composition
Members include State and UT Health Ministers, MPs, Central and State officials, non-official members and experts.
Functions
It reviews implementation of medical and public health policies and programmes and recommends measures with States and UTs.
Themes of the 16th Conference
Sessions cover NHM-SDG goals and priorities, Food and Drug Reforms, and Allied Health Services.

Don’t confuse with CCHFW vs Inter-State Council: Both rest on Article 263, but the Inter-State Council is a general body set up by the President, while the CCHFW is a health-specific advisory body of the Health Ministry.

Don’t confuse with CCHFW vs NITI Aayog Governing Council: The Governing Council covers all development policy with Chief Ministers; the CCHFW has State Health Ministers and deals only with health.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Constituted under Article 263; a lasting body on the syllabus. Statutory bodies drew only 7 Prelims questions; a conference alone gives few testable facts.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
