Why in news
On 19 May 2026, Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil chaired the 14th High-Powered Review Board meeting of the Brahmaputra Board in Guwahati. He also launched the State Water Reforms Framework (SWRF) to benchmark state water reforms.
What it is
The Brahmaputra Board is a statutory body under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, set up under the Brahmaputra Board Act, 1980. It plans integrated flood control, anti-erosion and water use measures in the Brahmaputra and Barak basins. Its High-Powered Review Board reviews its work and gives policy guidance.
Meeting
The 14th HPRB meeting was held at Guwahati on 19 May 2026, chaired by the Union Jal Shakti Minister.
Masterplans
76 river basins and sub-basins have been identified for masterplan preparation and updation, covering the Brahmaputra and Barak basins.
SWRF structure
The SWRF has 75 indicators across five dimensions: Policy & Regulation, Project Monitoring, Digitalisation & R&D, Infrastructure, and Community Engagement.
SWRF timeline
States and UTs have time till 31 December 2026 to undertake reforms and must respond on the indicators by 31 January 2027.
Board's future
The meeting discussed turning the Board into a modern, technology-driven, knowledge-based River Basin Organization (RBO).
Legal basis
The Brahmaputra Board was created under the Brahmaputra Board Act, 1980, and is headquartered at Guwahati.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A statutory river body with a new reform framework; a lasting topic, but few Prelims facts here and bodies seldom reach Mains.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
