- Why in news
- On 1 June 2026, Dr Jitendra Singh and Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil launched the ₹200-crore ANRF–Ministry of Jal Shakti MAHA Water Mission in New Delhi. An open call for startups and MSMEs was also opened.
- What it is
- The MAHA Water Mission is a mission-mode research programme run by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation with the Ministry of Jal Shakti. It funds consortia of universities, labs, startups and industry to take water technologies from lab to field. It is one of ANRF's Missions for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA).
- Outlay
- Projected outlay is ₹200 crore over five years, shared by ANRF and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- Support per consortium
- Selected consortia can get up to ₹20 crore for technology development, field validation and deployment.
- Five themes
- Themes: resource assessment and management, drinking water, water quality and ecological health, use efficiency and circular economy, and climate resilience and adaptation.
- Other MAHA missions
- ANRF has already launched MAHA missions in Electric Vehicles, Drones, Medical Technologies, 6G and Water.
- ISRO MoU
- The Department of Water Resources signed an MoU with the Department of Space/ISRO on the same day.
Don’t confuse with ANRF vs MAHA Water Mission: ANRF is the funding body for research; MAHA Water is one mission run under it with Jal Shakti.
Don’t confuse with MAHA Water Mission vs Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: The mission funds water technology R&D; Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari is a citizen-participation campaign for water conservation, with a tracking portal launched the same day.
Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.
Why it matters
- Funds field-tested water technologies through startups, MSMEs and labs, widening research funding beyond a few institutions.
- Links ISRO satellite and geospatial data to water mapping, groundwater assessment and irrigation planning.
Problems
- Moving prototypes to large-scale deployment needs adoption by states, which manage water.
Way forward
- Link mission outputs to the RDI framework for commercialisation and to state water departments for deployment.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: ANRF is a lasting research funding body and the mission is new. Few testable facts here, so a card without a question.
Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
