Why in news
On 4 November 2026 the Union Cabinet approved a second two-year engagement for the 75% of Agniveers not retained, creating a pathway for all to become regular soldiers.
What it is
Agnipath is the Centre's short-service recruitment scheme for soldiers, sailors and airmen below officer rank in the three Services. Recruits are called Agniveers and were originally engaged for four years, with a fixed share retained as regular cadre on merit. The remainder left with a Seva Nidhi package.
Retention on merit
25% of Agniveers are offered regular employment in the Defence Forces based on merit.
New second engagement
The remaining 75% get another engagement of 2 years, approved by the Cabinet on the Forces' recommendation.
Absorption as regular soldiers
After the two years, all Agniveers will be offered enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to willingness and selection criteria.
Better terms
The second engagement period carries higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.
Scheme continues
The Agnipath scheme will continue after four years of implementation, with branches opened to women among its listed achievements.
Coverage
Agnipath covers recruitment of personnel below officer rank in the Army, Navy and Air Force; it was launched in June 2022.

Don’t confuse with Agniveer vs regular soldier: Agniveers are fixed-term recruits; regular soldiers serve under standard terms with pension. Agniveers become regular only after selection.

Don’t confuse with Seva Nidhi vs pension: Seva Nidhi is a one-time exit package built from contributions; it is not a pension.

Defence: Prelims tests exercises (with whom), equipment (who makes it) and firsts.
