Why in news
On 10-11 July 2026, PM Modi visited Auckland, the first Indian PM visit to New Zealand in 40 years. The two sides raised ties to a 'Strategic Partnership' and endorsed a Roadmap to 2030 (joint statement, 11 July 2026).
What it is
India-New Zealand ties rest on shared democracy, the Commonwealth, a large Indian diaspora and common Indo-Pacific interests. Trade has stayed small. The 2026 upgrade adds a long-term framework covering defence, maritime security, trade, agriculture, education and disaster management.
Roadmap to 2030
The leaders endorsed the 'India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership: Roadmap to 2030' to guide joint action over four years.
Trade goal
The aim is to double two-way trade in goods and services to NZ$7 billion (about ₹35,000 crore) by 2030. The FTA has been concluded and signed.
CTF-150
In 2025 New Zealand commanded Combined Task Force 150 with India as Deputy Commander.
Multilateral support
New Zealand reaffirmed support for India's permanent UNSC seat. New Zealand joined the Global Biofuels Alliance.

Don’t confuse with IPOI vs Indo-Pacific Economic Framework: IPOI (launched by India in 2019) is a maritime cooperation initiative with pillars. IPEF is a US-led economic framework.

Don’t confuse with CTF-150 vs Indo-Pacific naval exercises: CTF-150 is a multinational task force of the Combined Maritime Forces. It does counter-narcotics and counter-terror patrol in the Western Indian Ocean. It is not a bilateral exercise.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.
